Intro to Investing for Students

Risk Appetites

The concept of investing is not a new one. It is said it originated in Amsterdam in the 1600s but there is also evidence that it originated from the ‘Code of Hammurabi’ all the way back in 1700 BC. However, the framework for investing has been constantly evolving and its necessity is ever more important in the modern world.

Here we will be covering how you, as students, can learn the basic concepts of investing to make your financial future a little bit more secure and your wallets a little heavier.

So, what does Risk Appetite even mean? Well in layman’s terms, it is the amount of money you’re willing to lose in your investment. The higher your risk appetite = the higher the amount of money you’re willing to lose to gain.

Low Risk Appetite

One of the lowest risk investments are high-yield savings accounts.

These are investments where you park your money and let it incur interest over time with little to no risk of losing your money. The values of these interest rates do vary, as they can start from 2.38% and go up to 6.15%. The percentage depends on the banks itself.

An important caveat is that a lot of these high-yield savings accounts do require you to do certain things to get the maximum amount of interest. Examples are like spending + depositing + investing on their platform or they could even require you to maintain a specific amount in the account; usually these amounts are around RM 100,000 to RM 200,000 (pro tip: the latter requirement is not ideal for students)

If all you want to do is park your money and forget about it while you still make a little money annually, then this method is perfect for you.

Another low-risk method of investing is something called Robo-advisors. These robo-advisors give you a risk assessment to complete and after you’re done, it will create a customized investment portfolio that suits your needs.

An amazing feature of these platforms is they also have something similar to high-yield savings accounts, where you can park your money and it will incur interest over time. Also, the interest rates are usually more attractive since you will be earning the maximum interest rate for just using the platform. The biggest benefit is that your money is incredibly liquid; only requiring a couple of days to withdraw and deposit.

Moderate Risk Appetite

With moderate risk investing, you’re going to need to be able to stomach some losses. Usually, this is as far as the average student investor would go but it’s not a bad place to keep your risk ceiling at.

Your gains will certainly be higher but at the expense of a potential loss. Examples of moderate risk investing would be spot trading stocks and index funds.

Spot trading stocks is buying a stock at a specified market value, the losses and gains are made at the 1-to-1 increase or decrease of stock price. For example, if you buy a stock at RM1.20 and the next day it goes up to RM 1.40, you just made RM0.20 in profit. It also works the other way around.

However, if your investment value decreases, it doesn’t mean your money is gone – just the value of your money within stock decreases. However, if this happens, it might increase over time, and you’ll make your losses back.

Index funds are just funds that contain a multitude of different companies to invest in. For example, the S&P 500 is an index fund that includes the top 500 companies in the United States.

(and yes, Malaysian students can invest in it too and it’s great!)

How it works is… if you put in RM1000 in the S&P 500, your RM1000 is spread across all the 500 companies. Therefore, your risk is spread out and it limits your losses if some of the companies perform badly on the list. Funds like this have more security and tends to trend higher consistently.

High Risk Appetite

This is where the hunger of daredevil student investors lingers. While it is not ideal for students to look into due to the earning capacity of the average student being on the lower end, high risk investing is still important and worth mentioning. Especially for those of you who are willing to take that risk.

The most common examples of high-risk investments are currency trading and leverage trading.

Currency trading is certainly one of the riskiest forms of investing, especially for students.

But what is it?

The currency market is the largest market in the world and it’s only growing. You are trading pairs of currencies against each other instead of buying a single one like a stock. The value of the currency pairs you may trade are extremely volatile and react to socio-economic or geopolitical landscapes of countries.

The losses can be catastrophic and the gains can be absolutely magical. While it is easy to get into, it is incredibly difficult to master.

Now leverage trading is a whole different bear. It works exactly like the stock market but you are leveraging the odds of a stock to go either up or down. These leverages are as low as 2x and can go as high as 20x.

That means if you trade or invest RM100 at a leverage of 20x, that RM100 is now being traded at a value of RM2000. This will greatly increase your profit capacity but will also increase the capacity of your losses. You will have to pay the loss of that RM2000 value if it goes sideways.

Again, this isn’t for the students who cannot stomach this amount of risk or has limited knowledge of these kinds of investments.

Risk is just one of the basic concepts for students to know before getting into investing. While all levels of risk have multiple methods of investing than the few we mentioned, identifying where you fall among these levels are crucial to step into the world of investing.

Remember that it is always better to step into investing than to never step in at all. Take risks and get your money to work for you early before you start working for your money.

For example, our homes have become our career hubs which led to remote working and working from home has become a trend, which will continue to grow towards the near future. Brands that can benefit from this should jump on this opportunity and make the best out of it.

Consumers are Looking for Brand Values, Not Value

It is pretty evident that the world has moved past the phase where consumers get attracted to brands purely based on aesthetic value. As the marketing world is evolving, so are consumers. The look and quality alone is not enough to convince one to invest in your brand or product, but it is whether the values and attributes of that brand align with the consumer. The ways in which consumers assess how brands address social issues and integrate practices that are environmental friendly has been magnified. Even key players in the cryptocurrency industry such as Bitcoin and Luna were not spared, with assets in freefall and charts painting a sea of red. “But hang on- what’s the significance of this, and how does cryptocurrency affect me? “But hang on- what’s the significance of this, and how does cryptocurrency affect me? I didn’t invest in it!” you might be thinking. While words like crypto and cryptocurrency have been tossed around enough that everyone’s heard of them, or at least attempted to invest, not everyone fully understands how cryptocurrency works or why its crash may have long-term implications. Don’t panic though, that’s why we’re here to help. Let’s break this down- step by step.

What is cryptocurrency?

Cryptocurrency is defined as “an encrypted data string that denotes a unit of currency. It is monitored and organized by a peer-to-peer network called a blockchain, which also serves as a secure ledger of transactions, e.g., buying, selling, and transferring.

A slightly less confusing explanation: cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual currency that is secured by cryptography (coding). This is important as this makes it nearly impossible to counterfeit or double-spend, which facilitates secure online payment which is recorded via digital entries to an online database (with details of specific transactions).

How do they work?

Cryptocurrencies run on a distributed public ledger call blockchain (to learn more about blockchain, click here). Blockchain serves as a record of ALL transactions updated and held by those holding cryptocurrency. Units of cryptocurrency are created via a process known as mining (we know what you’re thinking, and no, this has nothing to do with Minecraft. Or the dwarves from Snow White. Keep reading).

Mining here refers to a process of using computer power to solve complicated mathematical problems which will then generate coins. (Disclaimer: We’re not too sure what kind of math problems they use- but we’re pretty certain they’re a tad more complicated than the Add.Maths problems in our textbooks.)

Cryptocurrency users can also purchase currencies from brokers, then store and/or spend them online with cryptographic wallets. Examples of cryptocurrency include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Luna and Terra. Note: when you call yourself a cryptocurrency owner, keep in mind that you own nothing tangible. What you do own is a key which facilitates the transfer of a record or unit of measure from Party A to B, without the help of a third party.

Why does the Crypto Crash matter?

While the onrush of new tech and developments led to a boom in business and payment methods, a rise in hacking and data leaks also led to a significant rise in online financial scams.

The development of a safe and practically secure method of making transactions (i.e. cryptocurrency) seemed like an answer to these issues- but as the recent crash has shown us, efficiency can still fall to unexpected situations. However, while a major news item,(due to the suddenness of the crash), cryptocurrencies, thanks to their fairly small ecosystem, have had a minimal impact on the economy. Those who WILL feel the pinch will be mostly limited to creators and investors.

However, like all markets, this recent surge and crash will most likely delay the mainstream application of cryptocurrency- at least for a brief period of time. Until then, all that can be done is for investors to sit tight as these companies course correct and focus on rejuvenating their stocks in the long-term.

Colour Theory in Advertising

To a certain extent, most of us are familiar with how colours can play a huge role in enlivening things, be it a person, a picture, an outfit, or a space. The simple act of choosing just the right colour (yes, Goldilocks was right- it HAS to be just right) can make a real difference to the look, feel or style of things.

Doesn’t ring any bells?

Think about this- consider the difference between a room painted in light, cooler shades like pale blue or mint green, and a room painted in darker, warmer shades, such as dark brown, or maroon.

One leaves you with a light and airy feeling- another with a sense of coziness- and that, dear readers, is the impact of colour theory. And of course, it’s no surprise that colour theory has a role to play in advertising too!

Colour plays a role in determining the impact and reach of an advertisement (or product), as well as determining the perceptions of the audience. The different personalities (so to speak), and tonal inflections of colours can be what makes or breaks the audience’s reception to a product, and, in the long run, its success.

Brand personality is also an important factor to consider- with these personalities usually split into 5 dimensions, namely;

  • Sincerity,
  • Excitement,
  • Competence,
  • Sophistication, and
  • Ruggedness.

Once a brand’s personality has been established under each of these 5 personalities, it is easier to craft a suitable marketing persona and to plot out the appropriate traits- including colour.

For a better understanding of how colours and emotions are linked- here are some examples of colour vs. emotions generated:

Red: Fierceness, power, courageousness, energy, boldness.

(Note: Did you know that red stimulates the appetite & the pituitary gland?)

Orange: Friendliness, cheerfulness, fun, vitality.

(Note: Did you know that lighter shade of orange are used to appeal to upscale markets?)

Yellow: Optimism, clarity, warmth

(Note: Did you know that the eyes see the colour yellow first?)

Green: Balance, harmony, health, growth & freshness

(Note: Did you know that deep green is a colour commonly associated with prestige, and that green is known as the most calming shade to the human eye?)

Blue: Trustworthiness, strength, dependability, security

(Note: Did you know that blue is commonly preferred by men- and that it is a popular colour for offices?)

Purple: Wisdom, creation, imagination, royalty

(Note: Did you know that lavender is a shade which triggers nostalgia & sentimentality?)

Black: Prestige, boldness, seriousness, power, classical

(Note: Did you know that black is a popular colour choice for luxury products?)

Pink: Calmness, warmth, love, romance and femininity.

(Note: Did you know- while pink has been a popular colour choice in marketing products targeted at women, in recent years, there has been a backlash against the constant “pink-washing’ of products- pink in product design, product packaging, re-designing products specifically to include the colour pink.)

White: Innocence, purity and clarity.

(Note: Did you know that white often invokes a sense of spaciousness and order?)

Grey: Neutrality, professionalism, calmness and stability.

(Note: Did you know that grey is normally used to invoke sleekness and a feeling of high-end quality in advertising?)

It’s also important to factor in cultural considerations and their implications with colour theory too!

For example, the colour yellow symbolises hope and happiness- and it has more significance in Malaysia! In Malaysia, the colour yellow also symbolises sovereignty of the Conference of Rulers (known as the Majlis Raja-Raja) and their roles as leader of the faith in the constituent states. (Pssst- that’s why there’s a yellow crescent and a 14-point star on the Jalur Gemilang a.k.a the national flag!)

Meanwhile, red is a popular colour among the Chinese and Indian communities- red is known as a lucky colour among the Chinese, symbolising good fortune and prosperity, while the Indian community consider red a symbol of love, passion and fertility- making it a popular colour for bridal wear.

The History behind Michelin Star Ratings

As food and foodie culture become a major part of our social psyche, there comes a time when questions are asked, including “How DO we rate our food?” and “Who came up with a rating system anyway?” Allow us to shed some light on the situation…

How It Started…

So, to start with, initially there wasn’t really a rating system beyond a bunch of people yelling “My hometown does this food better!” “No, MY hometown DOES!” (Hmmm…sounds familiar)- with the general consensus being: anything non-local or unfamiliar was “exotic cuisine”. And then…cars were invented.

(Yes yes, we know this may seem off topic. After all, what does the invention of cars have to do with food ratings??? Give us a minute and we’ll get to it. )

A general consensus is that 1886, the year Carl Benz (yes, that Benz) patented his Benz Patent-Motorwagen, is the birth year of the car. However, as of 1900, cars were still in low demand, and in France, where our story begins, there were only a few hundred cars in use. The limited demand posed a problem for suppliers of cars- and of car parts. 

A pair of enterprising brothers decided that something needed to be done, to create a demand for cars (and by extensions, the car parts they supplied): Andre Michelin, founder of Michelin Tires, and his brother, Edouard Michelin. Together, they compiled information on travel routes, maps and lists of restaurants, hotels, mechanics, and gas stations along popular travel routes in France- creating the first ever Michelin Guide. With the first 350,000 copies handed out for free, the Michelin Guide expanded rapidly to cover Northern Africa and all of Europe within its first decade of existence.

What Came Next…

Following a brief pause during the First World War, the production of the guide got back on track in 1920, following which the Michelin brothers decided that it was time to up the ante. While the previous guide contained advertising and was free of charge, the new version was advertisement free-and you needed to pay to get a copy.

Realising that dining establishments were becoming a draw for motorists, they also expanded their restaurant listings.  A team of (anonymous) restaurant inspectors were hired, and in 1926, the first Michelin star was awarded to 46 restaurants in France- highlighting them as fine dining establishments. In 1931, the Michelin guide introduced a 3-star hierarchy, with the descriptions as follows:

  • 1 Star: A very good restaurant in its category.
  • 2 Stars: Excellent cooking, worth a detour.
  • 3 Stars: Exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey.

Following a brief hiatus in World War 2 (and corresponding adjustments for quality and the needs of the time), the Guide resumed, with a new qualification, the Bib Gourmand, introduced in 1955 to recognise high-quality fare served at modest prices- customised by region, and designed to cater to diners who wanted to enjoy quality food without breaking the bank.

How It’s Going…

Currently, earning a Michelin star is a symbol a majority of restauranteurs aspire to achieve-considering the resultant prestige, and increase in exposure and business. However, its extreme standards and expectations have resulted in a counter–movement where chefs either refuse, or demand the removal of their Michelin stars, arguing that it stifles their creativity in the kitchen, and adds on to a burden in an already taxing job.

This, however, has not changed the fact that the Michelin Star continues to be an iconic industrial marker of the culinary arts- with some insisting that its authenticity makes it the only rating which matters.

And so it goes that over a 100 years since its creation, the Michelin Guide remains a key authority in the culinary scene.
