The concept of investing is not a new one. It is said it originated in Amsterdam in the 1600s but there is also evidence that it originated from the ‘Code of Hammurabi’ all the way back in 1700 BC. However, the framework for investing has been constantly evolving and its necessity is ever more important in the modern world. Here we will be covering how you, as students, can learn the basic concepts of investing to make your financial future a little bit more secure and your wallets a little heavier.

Intro to Investing for Students

Risk Appetites

The concept of investing is not a new one. It is said it originated in Amsterdam in the 1600s but there is also evidence that it originated from the ‘Code of Hammurabi’ all the way back in 1700 BC. However, the framework for investing has been constantly evolving and its necessity is ever more important in the modern world.

Here we will be covering how you, as students, can learn the basic concepts of investing to make your financial future a little bit more secure and your wallets a little heavier.

So, what does Risk Appetite even mean? Well in layman’s terms, it is the amount of money you’re willing to lose in your investment. The higher your risk appetite = the higher the amount of money you’re willing to lose to gain.

Low Risk Appetite

One of the lowest risk investments are high-yield savings accounts.

These are investments where you park your money and let it incur interest over time with little to no risk of losing your money. The values of these interest rates do vary, as they can start from 2.38% and go up to 6.15%. The percentage depends on the banks itself.

An important caveat is that a lot of these high-yield savings accounts do require you to do certain things to get the maximum amount of interest. Examples are like spending + depositing + investing on their platform or they could even require you to maintain a specific amount in the account; usually these amounts are around RM 100,000 to RM 200,000 (pro tip: the latter requirement is not ideal for students)

If all you want to do is park your money and forget about it while you still make a little money annually, then this method is perfect for you.

Another low-risk method of investing is something called Robo-advisors. These robo-advisors give you a risk assessment to complete and after you’re done, it will create a customized investment portfolio that suits your needs.

An amazing feature of these platforms is they also have something similar to high-yield savings accounts, where you can park your money and it will incur interest over time. Also, the interest rates are usually more attractive since you will be earning the maximum interest rate for just using the platform. The biggest benefit is that your money is incredibly liquid; only requiring a couple of days to withdraw and deposit.

Moderate Risk Appetite

With moderate risk investing, you’re going to need to be able to stomach some losses. Usually, this is as far as the average student investor would go but it’s not a bad place to keep your risk ceiling at.

Your gains will certainly be higher but at the expense of a potential loss. Examples of moderate risk investing would be spot trading stocks and index funds.

Spot trading stocks is buying a stock at a specified market value, the losses and gains are made at the 1-to-1 increase or decrease of stock price. For example, if you buy a stock at RM1.20 and the next day it goes up to RM 1.40, you just made RM0.20 in profit. It also works the other way around.

However, if your investment value decreases, it doesn’t mean your money is gone – just the value of your money within stock decreases. However, if this happens, it might increase over time, and you’ll make your losses back.

Index funds are just funds that contain a multitude of different companies to invest in. For example, the S&P 500 is an index fund that includes the top 500 companies in the United States.

(and yes, Malaysian students can invest in it too and it’s great!)

How it works is… if you put in RM1000 in the S&P 500, your RM1000 is spread across all the 500 companies. Therefore, your risk is spread out and it limits your losses if some of the companies perform badly on the list. Funds like this have more security and tends to trend higher consistently.

High Risk Appetite

This is where the hunger of daredevil student investors lingers. While it is not ideal for students to look into due to the earning capacity of the average student being on the lower end, high risk investing is still important and worth mentioning. Especially for those of you who are willing to take that risk.

The most common examples of high-risk investments are currency trading and leverage trading.

Currency trading is certainly one of the riskiest forms of investing, especially for students.

But what is it?

The currency market is the largest market in the world and it’s only growing. You are trading pairs of currencies against each other instead of buying a single one like a stock. The value of the currency pairs you may trade are extremely volatile and react to socio-economic or geopolitical landscapes of countries.

The losses can be catastrophic and the gains can be absolutely magical. While it is easy to get into, it is incredibly difficult to master.

Now leverage trading is a whole different bear. It works exactly like the stock market but you are leveraging the odds of a stock to go either up or down. These leverages are as low as 2x and can go as high as 20x.

That means if you trade or invest RM100 at a leverage of 20x, that RM100 is now being traded at a value of RM2000. This will greatly increase your profit capacity but will also increase the capacity of your losses. You will have to pay the loss of that RM2000 value if it goes sideways.

Again, this isn’t for the students who cannot stomach this amount of risk or has limited knowledge of these kinds of investments.

a person holding a cell phone with an amg entertainment app on the screen

Risk is just one of the basic concepts for students to know before getting into investing. While all levels of risk have multiple methods of investing than the few we mentioned, identifying where you fall among these levels are crucial to step into the world of investing.

Remember that it is always better to step into investing than to never step in at all. Take risks and get your money to work for you early before you start working for your money.

It’s 2023 and this same question constantly looms over the minds of marketers, which is, “What do consumers really want?”

The whole idea of content marketing is to give what the consumers want, and delivering that is not as straightforward as people think it is. The marketing world is constantly evolving and it is crucial that you, as a marketer, understand where to channel your focus. The market is influenced by consumer behavior trends and changes, and in order to shift the focus towards that, here are some of the current consumer behavior trends to look out for.

A Digital View of Shopping

Ever since the global pandemic began, we were forced us to stay indoors and avoid any form of physical activity, and this is where the way consumers viewed shopping took a drastic change. Obviously the outcome was never drastic to a point the entire world switched to online shopping right away and the future of shopping is not going to be fully digital. This is evident with reports from Oberlo stating that 48% of consumers still do prefer doing their shopping in person. These are facts and numbers stating that physical shopping is not dead, but that does not mean online shopping is not on it’s ascendancy. The way people perceive online vs physical shopping has changed, and the type of product is not what matters, it’s convenience that does. How consumers shop, depend on how they want to do it at that particular time.

The Corona Home Effect

Home used to be the place where we used to rest after a long day, boot up some Netflix and chill for the night alone or with your family. Ever since the pandemic, a shift of trend was forced onto people and before you know it, our homes became the central hub for almost anything and everything. For example, our homes have become our career hubs which led to remote working and working from home has become a trend, which will continue to grow towards the near future. Brands that can benefit from this should jump on this opportunity and make the best out of it.

Consumers are Looking for Brand Values, Not Value

It is pretty evident that the world has moved past the phase where consumers get attracted to brands purely based on aesthetic value. As the marketing world is evolving, so are consumers. The look and quality alone is not enough to convince one to invest in your brand or product, but it is whether the values and attributes of that brand align with the consumer. The ways in which consumers assess how brands address social issues and integrate practices that are environmental friendly has been magnified. The takeaway here is that the higher the similarities the brand aligns with the consumer, the higher the probability of that consumer staying loyal to your brand.

AI and VR Takeover

We have been hearing and reading about artificial intelligence and virtual reality, and it is no foreign knowledge that these two technological advancements are continuously on the rise. This applies to the marketing industry as well. These technologies started off as an initiative that was only affordable to the big players in the market, but has expanded and become affordable for mid and small businesses. Businesses have begun to make these technologies more user friendly and we could potentially see consumers shifting to this side of the world soon. Several marketing and search engine platforms are making this switch too. Google in their I/O conference last month confirmed that AI is the future of search and on how their SERP’s will be generated with generative artificial intelligence.

In conclusion, there are various trends that need to be observed and studied in order to ensure that you, as a marketer, don’t fall behind. In the current fast pace moving world, you just can’t afford to do so.

Trends will keep changing, and you must stay ahead in the game!

What Should I Do After High School?

After finishing high school, students are faced with a tough decision of what they should do next. Some may choose to enter the workforce, while others may choose to further their education. In this blog post, we will discuss the various options available to students after finishing high school.

Pursue Higher Education

One of the most popular options after high school is furthering one’s education. Students can choose to attend a college or university to pursue a degree in their desired field. Higher education opens up a wide range of opportunities, including higher-paying jobs and career advancement. Moreover, college is an excellent place to meet new people and make new connections that can help in the future. However, higher education can be expensive, and students need to consider the cost of tuition and other expenses before making a decision.

Enter the Workforce

Another option available to students after high school is entering the workforce. Students can start applying for jobs in their desired field or any other job that interests them. Entering the workforce after high school has its advantages, including gaining valuable work experience, earning money, and avoiding the expenses of higher education. However, students should be aware that some jobs require specific skills or qualifications, and they may need to pursue additional training or certifications to improve their chances of getting hired.

Take a Gap Year

A gap year is a year-long break that students take after high school to explore their interests or travel. Students can use this time to work, volunteer, or take a break before entering higher education or the workforce. A gap year can be beneficial for students who are unsure of what they want to do next or want to gain life experience before making a decision. However, students need to be aware that a gap year can be expensive, and they need to plan accordingly.

After high school, students have several options available to them. Pursuing higher education, entering the workforce, or taking a gap year are all excellent options, and students need to decide what is best for them. It’s important to consider the cost, benefits, and potential drawbacks of each option before making a decision. Whatever the choice may be, students need to remember that it’s okay to change their minds and switch paths if they feel like it’s not the right fit.

When you think of a career in film, your mind is usually drawn to images of Hollywood, the glamour of Cannes, the Academy Awards, and film legends like Wong Kar Wai and Martin Scorsese. But film is a broader industry than you might think it is, and having a fulfilling career in film isn’t limited to the narrow confines of achieving stardom. The world is inevitably shifting towards a heavier desire for visual media, signaling a diversification in the roles and jobs available in the film industry. Here are a few pathways you can take after taking a degree in film.

1. Video Editor

With the rise of streaming services, and the number of consumers of both long and short form video content, the demand for editors to help during post-production is growing. Films and videos need an expert to transform them into the finished products that we view and consume. Film or video editors can work with major production or post-production companies, or even in-house with a variety of companies in their own marketing or content production departments. Film/video editing is a great career for film graduates who have a keen eye for creative and strategic edits, attention to detail, and have great communication skills. Film editors may experience long periods of down time in between projects, so it’s important to have a degree of self-motivation if you plan on pursuing a career in editing.

2. Producer

Aside from editing and post-production, there are a myriad of jobs and roles that you can explore in the film industry itself. This includes becoming a producer, and overseeing the completion of the creative operations necessary to produce a film smoothly and successfully. Film producers not only work on movie sets, or with film production companies, there are independent production houses and advertising agencies that also require the skills of a film producer. We’ve talked a lot about the visual medium, but audio productions such as podcasts are also a viable option for work. If you’ve got great leadership skills, a good eye for budgeting, and are great at making decisions under pressure, this might be the career for you!

3. Community Arts Worker

Film degrees can be utilised in the field of community arts, with the organisation and planning of community arts events. Community arts workers will communicate closely with various groups in the community to identify their needs and goals, and help to plan events and activities around those requirements. Community arts workers also help create artwork and advertising for these events/activities, which is where a film degree comes in handy. Film graduates have an eye for visuals, and are abundant in creativity, and will have the knowledge and capability to handle campaigns and events like productions.

4. Advertising Arts Director

The field of advertising is pretty closely linked to film. Both areas explore creativity and do their best to send a message through visual mediums. Art directors also need to work with a variety of people from different backgrounds to create a final product/campaign. Film graduates can transfer their skills and knowledge from their degree into the field of advertising easily, due to the similarities between the two fields, making this the perfect job for those who want to expand their circles outside of the film industry exclusively.

5. Broadcasting

Film graduates are also highly sought-after in the field of broadcasting. Large media companies like BBC, Channel News Asia, and more, rely on the capabilities of film graduates to run, film, record, and produce their regular broadcasts. These companies will require individuals with the technical skills to operate microphones, other audio devices, cameras, lights, and help with any editing if necessary. Specific jobs in the field of broadcasting that would be suited to film graduates include camera operators, production assistants, music directors, sound technicians, and many more. Graduates with a film degree may also serve as broadcasters themselves, and can take on roles such as presenting or directing media broadcasts.

6. Talent Agent

Studying film can help you build and forge a variety of industry connections that may be useful when it comes to furthering careers in general. If you feel like being in front of the camera isn’t for you, or if you’re more interested in the management and human resource side of things, then try being a talent agent! Working at a talent agency involves networking and building strong industry relationships, as well as being up to date and familiar with everything going on in the industry. Agents must also nurture, advise, and mentor their clients, to help them make the best decisions for their careers. Talent agents may be expected to work long hours and in highly competitive environments, but it is rewarding with plenty of compensation to cover any expenses generated by work.

The film industry itself has many roles and opportunities for niches to be filled by film graduates. However, one does not need to be limited to that particular industry in order to find success. There are many career paths in similar industries that have use for the skills gained by a film graduate. Whatever path you choose to take, make it your own and don’t look backwards.
